You’ve heard the adage: less is more. Or maybe this one: too much of a good thing can be bad. What does that mean? How can less be more? How can too much be bad? Think about it. There are definitely advantages to having more fun, excitement, and success. There are, however, many times when more of something can be a pain. Material possessions can be nice, but too many creates clutter and can lessen the excitement you once felt for your belongings. Eating decadent food is amazing, but too much is bad for your health. Exercising is great for you and increasing your exercise will increase your physical fitness. Too much exercise, though, can actually be detrimental to your health. You need to add in adequate rest in order for exercise to be most effective.
You don’t have to throw out all your things and become a minimalist to live more simply. Here are three ways to live a happier and simpler life:
DECLUTTER YOUR MOST USED SPACES: Think of the spaces in your home you use very often. For most people, these places include the bathroom sink, their beds, and their refrigerators. Refrigerators for example, can become cluttered and dirty very quickly. The state of your refrigerator can affect the state of your health and the state of your mind. Make sure all your food is visible and clearly labelled to make eating a simpler and more enjoyable experience. This concept can be applied to a bathroom sink and a bed as well. Clear your sink of non-essentials. Make it a habit to make your bed daily and your bedroom will instantly look neater. That can have a great effect on your mood.
SIMPLIFY YOUR MORNING AND NIGHTTIME ROUTINES: If you spend a lot of time getting ready in the morning, your routine may be to blame. Simplify your day and night by preparing breakfast or picking out your clothes the night before. If you find you’re always running 10 minutes behind, find ways to cut this down by preparing ahead of time. You’ll thank yourself later!
LEARN TO DESIRE LESS: Do you really need that new gadget? Or do you just want it? Learn to differentiate between wanting and needing. Many have said that there are two ways to live richly: you can acquire more, or desire less. A rich man that wants more isn’t as content as a poor man who wants nothing. Being content is about reducing the unnecessary desires, not about fulfilling every one. Re-evaluate the things you want and you may surprise yourself.
