Dog is man (AND WOMAN’S!) best friend. Our dogs bring us so much joy and unconditional affection. It’s only right that we return this affection and there are so many ways to do it! You might think you need to spend lots of money or time to properly spoil your dog. You might think only high maintenance pet parents can do this. You’d be wrong! A little goes a long way! Here are just a few simple and low cost ways to treat your pup:
WALK ANOTHER WAY: Any dog owner will tell you it is vital to walk your dog regularly, even if you have a yard for them to relieve themselves. For a dog, walking isn’t just a way to pass time. It’s important exercise and mental stimulation. If you don’t walk your dog, start today! If you do, change routes every few days. This will keep your dog excited and alert. There’s also the added bonus of teaching your dog about the neighborhood, which can be helpful in case he ever gets lost.
MAKE YOUR BEST FRIEND A PERSONALIZED MEAL: It may seem extravagant, but making food for your dog, or any pet for that matter, is easier than you think. There are lists of pet friendly foods available online. You probably already have ingredients on hand that would work well. For example, if you have a pound of ground meat you haven’t used, brown it in a pan and add some leftover brown rice or noodles to it. Throw in a piece of a yam and you’ve got a meal your dog will devour! Just make sure you steer clear of harmful foods like onions, raisins, and of course chocolate.
GO FOR A RIDE: You’ve seen it on TV, in movies, and probably in real life too! Dogs love to ride in the car! The scenery zooming by is so exciting for them. Unlike with us humans, the destination rarely matters to them. They just enjoy the experience. So go for a ride with your dog and talk to them as you go. Its great quality time and doesn’t cost much to do.
FULL SERVICE SCRATCHING: It won’t cost a thing to pamper your dog with one of her favorite pastimes- scratching! Dedicate 5 or 10 minutes to scratching, massaging, or brushing your dog. Tune into your dog’s enjoyment and give them your full attention. For those 5 minutes, your dog will feel like the top dog!
VET VISIT: This one may seem more like torture, but did you know you can take your dog to the vet for a social visit? Not only will your pup enjoy the interactions with other friendly animals, but it will also help him associate the veterinarian’s office with happy times. This will make future, more necessary visits, less stressful. That’s a gift for both of you!
