Daylight Saving Time (DST) is approaching, which means most U.S. states will “fall back” one hour and the evenings will arrive much quicker than we’ve been used to this summer. While DST means we get an extra hour of sleep, this biannual event serves as a good reminder for homeowners to take care of a few important tasks around the house.
In addition to changing times on clocks, there are more duties to be done that can improve how potential buyers could perceive your home.
Watch this video to learn more about the history of DST, and read below for tips on managing tasks around your home during this time transition.
Changing clocks is one of the most obvious and important tasks to complete around the house. While most of us have digital devices that change automatically, there are still other time displayers that need to be manually adjusted. These include wall clocks, microwave and stove displays, and clock radios.
Replace Smoke Alarm Batteries
Twice a year is the recommended amount to replace smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries, so DST serves as the ideal reminder to do so. Make sure to test the alarm while you’re at it to make sure the unit is functioning and not just out of battery power.
Inspect the Furnace
DST is a great time to enlist a professional for a furnace check-up before the bitter winter cold hits. A furnace that’s in good condition will run more efficiently throughout the winter, saving on electricity bills and decreasing the chances that it will break down and leave you stranded without heat.
Reverse Ceiling Fan Direction
During the cooler fall and winter months, ceiling fans should rotate in a clockwise direction at a low speed. This motion pushes warmer air downwards making the room feel warmer and more comfortable.
DST is an ideal time to check up on your home’s functions. If you have more questions about fall maintenance on your home, The Adler Home Team is here to help!
