Moving to a new home can be more complicated than not, depending on how many belongings you have, how far you’re relocating, and how many people in your family have a say in the process. But moving can be a necessity at certain points in life, especially at major milestones such as marriage, the birth of a child, or a new job.
Keep the following situations in mind to determine if it’s really time to move.
Uniting with another human being in marriage is one of the most exciting and important steps in a person’s life. But the honeymoon phase can quickly fade if the lovebirds’ dwelling space doesn’t accommodate both parties. If a couple lived separately before marriage, moving in together might be a tricky transition if neither is used to living with another person. In addition to everyday items such as clothes and personal belongings, wedding gifts can take up a ton of storage in a small space, which could cause a few fights early on in the marriage. Some couples do just fine in compact spaces, but if you’re pulling out your hair within the first few weeks it’s probably time to find a bigger place.
…then comes a baby (or several) in a baby carriage. Babies are exciting additions to a family, but they also come with a lot of stuff. Toys, cribs, highchairs–you name it. Not only do children usually require more bedrooms in a house, but it’s helpful to have a good amount of outdoor space as well. If your yard is basically non-existent, or if your one bedroom apartment in the middle of downtown isn’t working for your new kid-friendly lifestyle, it’s a good idea to start looking for a new home to fit your growing family.
Did you just get a new job farther away from your house? Or are you tired of driving one hour each way in rush hour just to get to work? Long commutes affect working professionals both physically and mentally, taking away time from the day that could be better spent elsewhere such as with family or exercising to improve your health. If a long commute has you at your wit’s end, consider moving closer to your job to eliminate some stress from your life. The neighborhood might be pricier or the homes may be smaller, but a new home could be worth it for the sake of your mental health.
If you’ve lived in your home for several years and have maintained it properly, chances are you have built up a bit of equity. If you’re looking to increase your savings or build up your other investments, considering selling and moving to a less expensive place to take advantage of your home’s value, especially if you don’t need the extra space anymore because your children have grown up and moved out or there’s been another significant change in your life.
If you’ve hit the long-awaited retirement milestone from decades of hard work, it is only natural to want to reward yourself by traveling to new and exciting places. If you can’t stop thinking about about spending winters on the beach in another state, or want to be able to be closer to your grandchildren, it’s worth considering to sell your home so you have the flexibility to go wherever you please. Chances are you don’t need all the space you have anymore, so take advantage of the opportunity to get out and about in the most uninhibited years of your life!
